Titia Ex Awakening of Mary
The Awakening of Mary is a light sculpture that brings Mary – both mother and virgin – to life. Ten contemporary women, aged between 21 and 73 and from diverse ethnic backgrounds, embody this universal woman: pure, earthy and inspired.
In a continuous video loop, consisting of eight to nine clips per woman, they are shown in their nakedness. Their heads remain modestly covered, framed by intimate close-ups of fragments of skin – wrists, fingers, necks. Here, the skin functions as a garment, as a veil: a tangible boundary that simultaneously invites closeness. This creates a subtle dialogue between body, environment and viewer.
Mary, as an archetype, is deeply rooted in our spiritual heritage, our collective DNA and our daily lives – visible and invisible. The women who embody her carry the historical and symbolic meaning of Mary with them. The projection evokes a sense of connection – an intimate moment in which purity, soul and respect for the body merge. A place where the spiritual and sensory worlds meet.
