Ilene Sunshine NL22

In an era dominated by digital technology, Ilene Sunshine is a ‘hands-on’ maker who explores the visceral physicality of materials. Moreover, by proposing a union of ‘natural’ and industrially-made’, her work is a mediation between these contrasting states.

NL22 is from a series of sculptures featuring translucent handmade paper, a new skin for broken toys and other plastic trash embodied within. Driven by the possibility of animating inert matter, she finds renewal in the glut of waste plucked from a beach or the city’s streets. There’s an alchemical aspect to her pursuit, a search for outcomes that defy rational description.
